Mavericks Structured Player Progression Model™
Our Structured Player Progression Model at Mavericks Football Academy provides a clear developmental pathway that helps players transition from the foundational stages of soccer to elite levels of competition. Our well-defined model ensures that players, parents, and coaches all understand what’s required at each stage and how progression is measured.
Our model is structured in phases, ensuring that players develop at the right pace, in the right environment, and with the right challenges. Here’s our optimized framework:
Foundations Phase (Ages 3-6) - Introduction to Soccer
Objective: Fun, engagement, and fundamental movement skills.
At this stage, the focus is on fostering a love for the game
while building coordination, basic motor skills, and comfort with the ball.
Key Aspects:
- Development Focus: Dribbling, balance, agility, and basic passing techniques.
- Training Environment: Small-sided games, engaging drills, and fun challenges.
- Coaching Style: Highly positive, encouraging, and focused on enjoyment.
- Competitions: No formal leagues; players participate in mini-games and festivals to develop confidence.
- Pathway Advancement: Players who demonstrate exceptional technical ability may be identified for Advances Technical Foundation Group.
Development Phase (Ages 7-10) – Technical Foundations
Objective: Build strong technical skills and basic tactical understanding.
Players are introduced to structured training environments while the major focus remains on skill development over winning.
Key Aspects:
- Development Focus: Ball mastery, passing and receiving, 1v1 situations, spatial awareness.
- Training Environment: More structured, yet fun-focused, with small-group training.
- Coaching Style: Teaching through guided discovery, encouraging decision-making.
- Competitions: Local leagues and small-sided tournaments to build confidence.
- Pathway Advancement: Players who demonstrate strong commitment and ability may be identified for pre-competitive teams.
Competitive Phase (Ages 11-14) – Tactical Growth & Competition
Objective: Prepare players for high-level competitive soccer by refining technique and tactical awareness.
At this stage, training intensity increases, and players are placed in
competition-appropriate environments.
Key Aspects:
- Development Focus: Advanced ball control, positional awareness, speed of play, and decision-making.
-Training Environment: Position-specific training, more tactical drills, and introduction to game analysis.
- Coaching Style: High accountability, player-led learning, and structured feedback loops.
- Competitions: State and regional-level leagues, select tournaments.
Pathway Advancement: Players demonstrating elite potential can be placed in Mavericks Elite Teams (Black Level) for higher competition.
Elite Performance Phase (Ages 15-18) – College & Pro Readiness
Objective: Prepare players for the highest levels of soccer—collegiate, professional, or elite amateur leagues.
At this stage, training becomes more specialized, incorporating physical
conditioning, mental resilience, and college/pro showcase opportunities.
Key Aspects:
- Development Focus: Advanced tactics, leadership development, exposure to high-pressure match situations.
- Training Environment: Increased intensity, competition, and mentorship from experienced coaches.
- Coaching Style: Individualized feedback, video analysis, and match-specific training.
- Competitions: National-level tournaments, showcases, and high-tier leagues.
- Pathway Advancement: Players are guided toward college recruitment, professional trials, or senior-level club play.
College & Professional Pathway (18+) – Next-Level Opportunities
Objective: Connect players with the right opportunities for their future.
The Mavericks Football Academy actively supports players in reaching the next
level through established partnerships with college programs, professional
clubs, and scouting networks.
Key Aspects:
- College Pathway: College recruitment seminars, highlight video creation, networking with college scouts.
- Pro/Elite Amateur Pathway: MLS Next Pro, USL Academy, international trials with clubs outside of the United States of America (Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Morocco, France…and more) and semi-pro leagues.
- Support System: Ongoing mentorship, guidance, and career development resources.
Player Evaluation & Progression Criteria
To ensure consistent growth, players will be evaluated at least
twice per year using the following four pillars of player development:
1. Technical – Ball control, passing accuracy, first touch, dribbling.
2. Tactical – Positioning, decision-making, understanding of formations and game situations.
3. Physical – Speed, endurance, agility, strength, injury prevention.
4. Psychological – Coachability, resilience, leadership, mental toughness.
